2. Formation des comparatifs et superlatifs

★ À maîtriser

  • With short adjectives, the comparative is formed with -er and the superlative with the -est, as in dark, darker than, the darkest.

  • With adjectives ending in y, y changes to i before -er or -est, as in funny, funnier than, the funniest.

  • With long adjectives, the comparative uses more ... than and the superlative uses the most ..., as in powerful, more powerful than, the most powerful.

  • Than follows a comparative and the precedes a superlative.

  • In the sentence “This mural is darker than the first one”, darker compares two murals.

4. Comparaison des adverbes

📌 For short adverbs, the comparative and superlative can use -er and the -est, as in hard, harder, the hardest and early, earlier, the earliest.

📌 For adverbs ending in -ly, the comparative uses more ... and the superlative uses the most ..., as in carefully, more carefully, the most carefully.
