1. Portuguese Exploration

  • Portuguese navigation expeditions: Maritime voyages initiated by Portugal during the 15th century aimed at exploring new sea routes, expanding territorial knowledge, and establishing trade networks along Africa and beyond. These expeditions were motivated by economic and religious goals, including bypassing Muslim-controlled trade routes.

  • Henry the Navigator (1394–1460): Portuguese prince and patron of exploration who played a crucial role in advancing maritime exploration along the African coast. He sponsored numerous voyages, promoted navigation techniques, and established outposts to facilitate further exploration.

  • Bartholomeu Dias: Portuguese explorer who, in 1487, led an expedition that reached the southern tip of Africa, discovering the Cape of Good Hope. His voyage proved that it was possible to circumnavigate Africa to reach Asia, opening new maritime routes.
