1. Brexit Definition

  • Brexit: Short for "British exit," it refers to the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union (EU), a political and economic union of European countries aimed at promoting cooperation, free trade, and freedom of movement.
  • European Union (EU): A political and economic union of European countries designed to facilitate cooperation, free trade, and movement among member states. At the time of the referendum, it included 28 member states.
  • 2016 UK Referendum: A national vote held on 23 June 2016 where over 30 million people voted on whether the UK should remain in or leave the EU; results were 51.9% Leave and 48.1% Remain, with about 72% turnout.
  • Official Brexit Date: The date when the UK formally exited the EU, which was 31 January 2020, followed by a transition period until 31 December 2020 during which EU rules continued to apply.
  • Transition Period: The period from 31 January 2020 to 31 December 2020, during which the UK and EU negotiated future arrangements while the UK remained subject to EU rules.
