2. Stéréotypes et guerres générationnelles

Notions clés & Définitions

  • Generational stereotype : An unfair generalization that portrays a generation in a simplified way.
  • Generation wars : Conflicts in which different generations criticize and stereotype one another.

Points essentiels

  • Gen Z is commonly portrayed as lazy, antisocial or entitled.

  • The article studied from The Guardian explains that each generation criticizes and stereotypes the others unfairly.

Astuce mémo

Stéréotype contre réalité : chaque génération critique l’autre.

3. Pression et perfectionnisme

Notions clés & Définitions

  • Perfectionism : The belief that one must succeed at everything and is a complete failure after failing.

★ À maîtriser

  • Pressure on teenagers can come from:

    • parents
    • friends
    • social media
    • school
    • teenagers themselves
  • Teenagers may seek approval from friends, social-media followers or parents, feel that they must be perfect, and experience shame when they fail to measure up.

Compléments

  • The text states that failing at something does not make someone a failure. - The Star, Teens under pressure to be perfect now more than ever, 2018

Astuce mémo

Attentes et réseaux sociaux → pression → sentiment d’échec.

4. Médias et évolutions technologiques

★ À maîtriser

  • The infographic “Teens and Media Over the Years” compares teenage communication, socializing and technology use across different periods.

  • In 2015, teenagers may have communicated differently rather than stopped communicating with their friends.

Compléments

  • 🔄 The classroom comparison follows these steps: study an assigned period, answer questions about communication and technology, present the period, complete a comparative table

Astuce mémo

1995 → 2005 → 2015 : communiquer autrement.

  • Teenagers in 1982 used Walkmans, whereas teenagers today use smartphones.

When Baby Boomers were teenagers, smartphones did not exist.”

6. Exprimer les habitudes passées

★ À maîtriser

📌 Pour parler d’habitudes passées qui n’existent plus, used to se construit avec sujet + used to + base verbale, et la forme négative avec didn’t use to + base verbale.

Compléments

  • Teenagers used to listen to music on a Walkman, but they didn’t use to have smartphones.

📌 Pour présenter des stéréotypes, la voix passive se forme notamment avec be portrayed as, be described as, be accused of + V-ing et be criticized for + V-ing.

8. Construire le dialogue intergénérationnel

★ À maîtriser

  • Intergenerational relationships can improve through:

    • dialogue
    • friendship
    • mutual understanding
    • support
    • solidarity
  • The final infographic must: challenge one stereotype about Gen Z, describe one difference between Gen Z and an older generation, explain one difficulty young people face today, suggest two ways to improve intergenerational relationships
